Demographic/ Psychographic Profiling

A demographic is a method of audience research, done by film producers to see what who their film would appeal to most so they can set up an advertisement campaign based around it. Demographics splits an audience into different classes based on their job. This gives the producer a basic idea of who the film will appeal to, but the context of the film also has to be taken into account. Demographics do not include everyone, and do not go on by how much money they earn and how it is spent. Demographics split the audience into six different classes:
  • A - Bankers, doctors, lawyers and other professionals
  • B - Teachers media designers and creative designers
  • C1 - Junior managers, specialist clerical staff and nurses - white collar
  • C2 - Plumbers, builders and other skilled manual workers - blue collar
  • E - Semi-skilled and unskilled manual workers
  • F - Unemployed, students and pensioners
By using these demographics producers can focus on a specific audience type/s, for example, a political film could be aimed at those in classes A, B and C1.

A psycho graphic is similar to a demographic, but instead assesses the attitude of the audience through personality traits. It goes even further to assess their spending and viewing habits. Psycho graphics is split into seven categories.

Main streamers
Domestic/ conventional, they favour value for money family brands - seeks security.

Aspires
Materialistic and orientated around their image and fashion, younger people - seeks status.

Succeeders
Has strong goals, confident, typically professional - seeks control.

Resigned
Rigid and authoritarian values, older people - seeks survival.

Explorers
Energetic/ individual, has value for being different, young demographic - seeks discovery.

Strugglers
Disorganised, few resources beyond physical skill. Attracted to drugs and alcohol - seeks escape.

Reformers
Wants freedom of restriction and personal growth, socially aware - seeks enlightenment.

These are all key factors when the producer is deciding what kind of audience he is aiming his film at.

we would add our thriller at a higher demographic but also keeping it open for a younger audience due to the main protagonist is in his early twenties, the film is very smart and gets you thinking on what is real and what is not that's why it is promoted to a higher demographic because with our film you have to think and realise what is happening whilst you are watching it rather than an action thriller where you can predict what is going to happen.
